Award Winner—

Welcoming Embrace (WE) is an organization that provides a stable support system for newcomers within the most vulnerable time of their transition to Canada (within their first 6 months - 1 year). An app connects them to receive mentorship, set goals, and connect to a community that helps adjust them to their new life.

01 Connection

Our first point of contact is through the Community Airport Newcomers Network (CANN) at YVR who connect with newcomers to answer questions and offer translation services. CANN collects information about where they are staying and any urgent needs they might have.

02 Care Package

WE receives care information from CANN and delivers a care package to the newcomers residence the next day.

KEY: Most organizations wait for newcomers to approach them. By that point, it's usually an emergency. WE reaches out in person to prevent that from happening.

03 Download the App

A booklet included in the care package prompts newcomers to download the app. The booklet relies on friendly and inclusive illustrations to communicate the action.

04 Meet with Mentor

The WE app connects newcomers to a community with easy-to-search tips and tricks from their peers. Newcomers also meet with a mentor who provides support, resources, and helps set up goals.

05 Mentor Group

Along with being assigned to a mentor, they are also assigned to a mentor group that meets regularly for social activities and networking.
